Why Beth's death on The Walking Dead affected us the way it did

For me, Beth's character on The Walking Dead was neither here nor there for a long time. I didn't like or dislike her she was just there.
After the attack on the prison and everybody got out and went their own separate ways did they finally start building her character and you grew attached to her somewhat. Not so much that her death in those first few episodes after the prison would have affected you as harshly as it did when it happened.

She effectively disappears for quite a while we have no clue what's going on. When we find her again she's in the hospital and to me those episodes were extremely long drawn-out and boring even though they did have a use of course.
When they finally go in to do the trade, Beth stands up and makes her move to save Noah and in turn gets killed. I absolutely love her for this and what a way to go out totally unexpected. Some people think this was a waste and that she shouldn't have done it. Rick  and the group would have taken care of any Revenge.
I believe she was totally justified and loved seeing her take her own Revenge by herself.
I think the thing that made the death so horrible was that we are
about to see everything work out
and bamm! that happens.
It was completely unexpected. Rick Daryl and Maggie and all of the characters' reactions were so heart-wrenching that to me it made it one of the most epic deaths in the whole show. Yep I said it even Hershel didn't affect me that way. I started out not even caring one way or the other about Beth and that scene made me cry like a baby.
